Edward Hoag

d. April 7, 2018

Edward “Eddie” Hoag of Ventura, California, age 67, passed away Saturday, April 7, 2018. He was born April 13, 1950 in Port Hueneme, CA to Herb and Nellie Hoag who preceded him in death. Eddie grew up in Hueneme and South Oxnard, where he attended Ansgar Larsen Elementary, E.O. Green Jr. High, and Hueneme and Channel Islands High Schools, graduating in 1968 from CIHS. He always loved the ocean and spent countless hours fishing, boating, and swimming in and around Pier One and the old Hueneme Pier with his fellow “wharf rats” during his childhood. Bitten by the surfing bug at 14, Eddie became a skilled and dedicated surfer. After high school, he moved to Silverstrand to be closer to the beach and continued to enjoy his favorite pastime, until many years later when health issues made it impossible to do so. Eddie liked guns, guitars, foot stompin’ music, and any kind of interesting machinery. He was particularly fond of cool old cars, clean-looking pickup trucks, and vintage motorcycles. Eddie also loved all animals from baby ducks to grey whales, but especially his Springer Spaniels, several of which rode shotgun with him over the decades. He disliked bureaucracy, arrogance, and incompetence. He was quick to identify anyone doing a poor job in any endeavor, and just as quick to praise those who excelled in their work. In 1982, Eddie was working for an oil field company and met the love of his life, Cathleen Jeannine Vause, while she was working at Beam’s Market on the beach. He wooed her with his famous Donald Duck impression and sense of humor. They were married on August 18, 1984 and had their only child, son, Cody David Hoag on April 9, 1987. The years of fatherhood on Silverstrand were some of his best. He absolutely loved to spend time fishing, surfing, and pitching a tent in the back yard with Cody. Recently, he was captivated with his two joyful granddaughters, Cambria and Paisley, and treasured entertaining them at the house. Above all, Eddie was a loyal friend. He actively maintained contact with many who had “drifted away” over the years and loved to call up old pals and chat about adventures from days long ago. Eddie is survived by wife, Cathy Hoag; son, Cody Hoag and his fiancé, Catherine Tafoya; granddaughters, Cambria Nellie Hoag (age 3) and Paisley Coral Hoag (age 1); and mother-in-law, Barbara Croft, all of Ventura; as well as father-in-law, Terrence Vause (Richland, WA); brother, Bill Hoag and his wife, Nada (Prospect, OR); brother, David Hoag and his wife, Margie (Auberry, CA); as well as many nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins, and friends. “Hey, Hoag!... Hey, Al... Fate Slober... Hey, Murray... Marko... Uhhh, Yeah!... Haighin’ it/Hoagin’ it... Guess What?!... Whaaazzz Up?!!... Eddie Boy... Puggy... Team Shred, Over and Out!” A paddle out memorial will take place June 23, 2018 at 10 am. Please meet at the North Jetty at Silverstrand Beach, a BBQ will follow at 1pm at Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura. Please bring a side dish and B.Y.O.B.
