Silvia Emhardt passed away on September 20, 2011, in Ojai, California. She was surrounded by her family and friends.
Silvia was born in Locarno, Switzerland, on September 13, 1919. She grew up in England and graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, and studied ballet at the Pavlova School of Dance in London. During World War II she toured England as the lead actress in the play Chu Chin Chow, while also volunteering with the Red Cross. She married American Navy Commander Robert Vining in 1945. They moved to his home in Brooklyn, where they had two children, Alana and Janis. After his death in 1949, Silvia married actor Robert Emhardt in 1954, who adopted the two girls. Silvia and Robert had two children together, Christopher and Mia. The family lived in New York, Connecticut, and California, calling Ojai home since 1974. She was the proud grandmother to Emily and Christine, daughters of Chris and his wife Jana.
Silvia was actively involved in numerous animal rights’ causes which were dear to her heart. She worked with the Ojai Festivals committee, and also with the Episcopal Church for many years. She was active in politics and worked on President Obama’s 2008 campaign. She was a dedicated volunteer with Canine Adoption and Rescue League, a local dog rescue group, for over 15 years. Silvia was an avid gardener and reader, and loved all animals. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, working in her garden, and was always surrounded by her faithful dogs.
Silvia was beloved and admired by her family and friends. She was dedicated to many causes, but her proudest achievement was her family. She was an inspiration to all who knew her for she lived life with spirit, courage, and compassion. She will be dearly missed. She is survived by her three daughters, her son and daughter-in-law, and two granddaughters.
