Robert Dwayne Coker passed away of natural causes June 6, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Leota Coker and sister, Charlene Smith. Robert is survived by his children Michelle Smith, Robin Coker and William Coker, his siblings William Coker, Daniel Coker, Beverly Inloes, his grandchildren Cebrina, Cheyenne, Brooke, Zachary, Athena and a grandson due in September as well as many nieces and nephews.
Robert was born November 9, 1953, in San Diego. In 1960, the Coker family moved to Ventura County where Robert would spend the rest of his life. Robert graduated from Rio Mesa High School in 1971. He worked at the Coker Bait Co and in construction until 1975. He then enlisted in the US Army. Robert chose to train in Telecommunications, a decision that would shape and define the rest of his professional life. Robert was very clever and quickly proved the ability to hone and develop his skills and knowledge within the industry beyond that of the average Technician. Robert continued to excel as a Technician and had a growing affection for Telecommunications. He was discharged in 1978, yet remained as an Army Reserve for an additional three years.
After the military, Robert immediately obtained employment with GTE, later Verizon / Frontier where he worked for 38 years. Robert continued to excel in telecommunications and proved his talent, knowledge and desire was beyond anything that could be taught, learned or duplicated. He worked his way through the years and ranks with respect and dignity, ultimately becoming a very well respected top notch technician. He loved what he did for a living. When Robert’s peers and customers speak about him, he is constantly referred to as “The Guy”. The guy you called first, the guy who answered your questions, the guy who has a resolution, ultimately the guy you could count on!
Robert was an honorable man who was very sincere and caring. He was proud of his family and loved them dearly. Aside from family and work, he enjoyed music, playing guitar and singing. Did we mention he was a great dancer? Camping, fishing, exploring lakes, mountains and beaches is what he loved to do. Robert was a designer and craftsman who excelled at working with his hands and mind. He had a kind soul, mellow demeanor and an unforgettable smile that will be forever missed.
Services will be held on Wednesday, June 15th at 11:00 AM at Perez Family Funeral Home 1347 Del Norte Rd, Camarillo CA 93010.
