Richard “Dick” Rungren died early in the morning on Dec. 10, 2010 in the home where he lived for the last 36 years. He was born January 10th, 1937 to Herbert and Bernadine Rungren. Richard was the oldest of five children. He spent his childhood in Duluth Minnesota until his family moved to Albuquerque, NM in 1955, shortly after he graduated from high school. Richard was very athletic. He loved swimming, diving, boxing and body building. He was an accomplished boxer in the Golden Gloves Organization, becoming the runner up welter weight champion for the state of New Mexico. Richard paid his way through college, in part by working as a lifeguard at the A-Pool where he met Jackie Vigil, who he married in 1960. After graduating from UNM with a BS degree in Electronics Engineering, Richard moved his family to California, where he got a job as a Federal Employee working for the Department of the Navy. In 1974, Richard moved his family to Ventura, California, where he was to finish out his 37 year working career. Richard was a licensed pilot and he loved to fly for fun. He also enjoyed snorkeling and body surfing. Although there were many good times, Richard suffered through a tragic loss when his wife, Jackie, died suddenly in 1982. Richard remained close to his children and grandchildren and he spent a lot of time with them. Although he never remarried, he did have a close relationship with Rita Branch for over 20 years.
Richard is survived by his children: Jeff and wife Susan, Bret, Jamie and husband Matt Cardiff, Nichole and husband Spencer Kirkpatrick and seven grandchildren: Tom, Dylan, Corey, Aubrey, Trevor, Levi and Ella.
