It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Phyllis Junko Nishida on Nov. 30, 2008. She was born on Dec. 14, 1936 in Los Angeles. As a young girl, she and her family lived in Denver, CO. After marrying Jim in 1958, in Las Vegas, NV, they resided first in Port Hueneme and then settled in Oxnard.
Prior to retirement in 2001, Phyllis worked for the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office for 32 years, where many dear friendships were formed. It was there that she would enlist the help of her co-workers and together they would be the Secret Santa for a family in need.
Phyllis enjoyed traveling to new places and if there happened to be a casino nearby, there was always enough time to stop and play the video poker machines. A talented crocheter, she made many beautiful afghans that her family and friends will treasure forever.
She also loved to bowl and play golf with her many friends. A wonderful cook and baker, Phyllis loved to use fresh, local produce from her favorite Farmer’s Market vendors. Many became dear friends and the lucky recipients of her delicious cookies. Most of all, she enjoyed being an enthusiastic cheerleader at her grandchildren’s basketball games.
Phyllis is survived by her husband, Jim: son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Julie Nishida; daughter and son-in-law, Candace and Patrick Smith; granddaughter, Kiersten Smith; and grandsons, Ryan Smith, Scott Nishida and Jeremiah Nishida.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Phyllis’s memory may be made to the American Lung Association.
