He never had any schooling, yet he was amazing at math, especially long multiplication and division and dealing with the financial aspect of collecting for goods. At a young age, about nine years old, by foot he would cross the sierras to go trade for food and supplies. He also traded live stock; it was all done by foot. It would take many days and nights to cross several towns to get to his destination. At about age twenty he met his future wife Margarita. Five of the six children were born in Metepec, Hidalgo. Eulalia,Yolanda, Blanca, Pedro, and Gilberto.
At age thirty he migrated to Mexicali, Baja California because he used to cross into the United States as a bracero, to a town called Yuba, California where he started work as an agricultural farmer. He was then moved to Oxnard and worked for a company called Ventura Coastal. When the temporary work ended he opened a business, a Tortilleria, in Mexicali in 1968.
His last son Esteban was born in Mexicali, Baja California in 1972. He then moved his family to the United States of America and worked permanently with Ventura Coastal, as an agricultural laborer, where he was employed for sixteen years and retired in 1990.
He is survived by his wife Margarita, three daughters Eulalia, Yolanda, Blanca and three sons, Pedro, Gilberto, and Esteban. Also a proud Grandfather of twenty grandchildren, thirty one great grandchildren and one great- great grandchild and a second one on the way.
Pedro Leyva Lemus husband, father, “Tata”, and friend will be missed dearly.
