Pablo Torres Jaques
(1917-2012)
Pablo Torres Jaques passed away surrounded by his loving family in the early hours of March 10 at St. John’s in Oxnard, California. He was 95. He lived in Oxnard for more than 40 years.
Pablo was born January 24, 1917 in a small town known as Carretas in the state of Durango, Mexico, to Guadalupe Jaques and Pablo Torres. He was the first of two children. At the tender age of 11 he began to help his father, a farmer, plow the land.
His family moved to Colonia Jesus Agustin Castro, also in Durango, during his teenage years. That’s where he met Natividad “Nati” Renteria Flores, who would become his wife. But she first met his mother, who would often visit her house and bring gifts including flowers and vegetables.
Pablo and Natividad met on weekends when Natividad, a young 15-year-old, went out grocery shopping. They married December 9, 1939, after two years of courtship, and welcomed their first child, Benjamin, in February of 1941. They resided in Jesus Agustin Castro after marrying, and had three more children: Rosalinda, Hilda and Elizabeth.
Then they moved to Tijuana, Baja California. Pablo was unable to find steady work, so their stay there was short. Pablo moved his family again, this time to the city of Juarez in Chihuahua. With money he had saved from his previous farming work and the sale of cattle that had been bequeathed to him by his late father, Pablo bought a small house and opened up a neighborhood grocery store.
In the following years, Pablo and Natividad had five additional children—Efrain, Pablo, Elsa, Martha Ruth and Daniel. Pablo worked tirelessly to provide for his family, often times gone from dawn until dusk picking cotton, selling fruit, vending all kinds of merchandise, doing plumbing work, among many other trades—no job was too hard or too long if it meant putting food on the table and providing a shelter for his loved ones. He was a humble, honest and modest man.
In 1970, Pablo and his wife left their home country of Mexico. They relocated to Port Hueneme, Ventura County, then Oxnard. Pablo had a knack for repairing televisions and lawnmowers, which he would buy used and fix up to then sell at the farmer’s market on Sundays. This provided a steady income in his later years until he retired.
Pablo was a loving and devout son, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a man of faith and active member of El Rio Spanish Seventh-Day Adventist Church. He attended service every Saturday until he couldn’t because of his health.
He enjoyed music, going to rodeos and dog races in his early adulthood, and later in life could spend hours playing dominoes with his sons-in-law at family gatherings.
Pablo is survived by his wife of 73 years, Natividad; all nine of their children; 17 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and a younger brother.
Surviving family members will celebrate his life during a public viewing and religious service on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 from 11am, at the El Rio Spanish Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 2670 Alvarado Street in Oxnard. Church services will be followed by the burial at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park.
