Norah was born on July 12, 1924 to Andrew Hilton and Jane Pollit Hilton in Radcliffe, England. She had one older brother Holland. The family immigrated to the United States 1926, arriving at Ellis Island in New York. The family eventually settled in Detroit, Michigan where Andrew worked at the Ford Motor Plant.
Norah met Guy Chambers following World War II. They were subsequently married in 1950 and had two daughters, Patricia and Susan. They were divorced in 1956 after which Norah moved to Los Angeles with her two daughters and her Mother and Father. They joined Holland, who remained in California after the war. The family finally settled in the San Fernando Valley in the City of Granada Hills.
Norah worked for Dot Records (where her favorite recording artist was Pat Boone). She eventually secured a job with the City of Los Angeles. She worked at City Hall in downtown Los Angeles for approximately 20 years. Later she transferred to the Van Nuys City Hall, working in the Civil Engineering Department writing building permits at the public counter. Norah retired at the age of 70, having worked for the City of Los Angeles for 36, years, 8 months and 6 days!
Norah always worked hard to provide for herself and her family, demonstrating a strong work ethic, personal responsibility and dedication to family. In the early years, her Mom and Dad and “Uncle Holland” helped her in raising Pat and Susan. During their teen years however, Mom was on her own raising her daughters as she faced many challenges, both financially and emotionally. Teenagers are God’s special gift to parents!
Norah lived to see the joy of her five grandchildren and loved them all equally. She also became the proud great-grandmother of eight beautiful great-grandchildren. Throughout the years, she celebrated every birthday, Baptism, First Holy Communion, graduation, Christmas, Easter and Thanksgivings with her family.
Her strength was never more evident when nine years ago, she suffered a stroke which severely limited her physical abilities. Despite these hardships, it did not impair her spirit. Norah always kept her sense of humor, affection for us all, and never complained about her suffering.
Five years ago, Norah made the decision to be cared for in a skilled nursing facility in Simi Valley. She made many friends there and was dearly loved by staff and residents alike. Norah occupied much of her time reading, crocheting, and knitting. Norah knitted colorful scarfs for the entire family, which we will always treasure. Her other hobby was painting. She enjoyed painting, among other things, beautiful landscapes (her favorite artist was Thomas Kinkaide). Her own personal favorite was “Rosie the Riveter”.
She was an amazing mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend whose incredible strength, determination and perseverance left us a legacy and she will always be remembered. Our lives have been so blessed by her presence and her love. As she joins the angels and saints in heaven, we thank God for the gift of her life!
Mass will be celebrated for Norah on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at 11am located at Holy Cross Church in Moorpark. A reception will follow also at Holy Cross Church.
