Nellie G. Cabriales
January 29, 1929 - January 18, 2021
Nellie G. Cabriales, age 91 of Moorpark, California passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, January 18, 2021. Nellie was born in San Jose CA on January 29, 1929, the youngest child of Juan and Nellie Garcia. Her family moved to Ventura County and settled in Moorpark in 1930, where her father found work on a local ranch. One of Nellie’s fondest memories as a young girl was riding her bike through town. She attended Northside Elementary School and graduated from Moorpark High School in 1947.
Nellie met and married the love of her life - Navy Chief Petty Officer Eulalio “Lalo” Cabriales in 1954. They began their life together as a military family, traveling with Navy assignments to establish homes in Washington, Louisiana and Sasebo, Japan. Upon retiring from the Navy in 1961, Lalo and Nellie returned to Moorpark. More than anything, Nellie enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Her faith, support, loyalty and love for her family is the legacy she leaves behind for all of us. She always looked forward to weddings and family celebrations as she loved to dance! Nellie and Lalo had the Hawaiian “aloha spirit” in their hearts and every year they traveled to Waikiki to celebrate Mother’s Day. Nellie was a voracious reader, enjoyed gardening (especially orchids), loved listening to Elvis Presley and was a diehard LA Angels baseball fan.
Nellie had a heart for serving and helping others. In the 1960’s, she worked as an aide at Camarillo State Hospital. During the 1970’s and 1980’s Nellie worked with the Moorpark School District as an instructional aide, helping students and their parents who were enrolled in the Migrant Education Program. She helped improve educational opportunities for students by translating for them and encouraging them. Her gentle nature and encouraging spirit made a difference in the lives of her students. Her willingness to travel to students homes to help translate for their parents was always deeply appreciated. During their retirement, Nellie and Lalo became active members of the Moorpark Senior Center. One of their favorite memories from these years was making new friends and exploring new destinations.
During the last several years of her life, Nellie struggled with dementia, yet her faith and love of family never wavered and remains an inspiration to all who knew her. Nellie is survived by her three children: Susan (Ralph) Gutierrez, Gary (Sandra) Cabriales and Steve Cabriales; grandchildren: Andrew, Alissa, Ernie, Andrea, Kevin, Christa, Brittany, and Justin; great-grandchildren: Alexis, Vanessa, Alyssa, Jayda, Jacob, JJ, Gracelyn, and Brody; and great-great-grandchildren: Ivan, Londyn and Maisie. Nellie also leaves behind many other family members and friends who loved her tremendously. She was preceded in death by her husband Lalo and her granddaughter Lisa Gutierrez.
A private family service will be held at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Memorial Park in Westlake Village at noon on Friday, February 19. Online condolences may be made at Nellie’s memorial website at: www.PerezFamilyFuneralHome.com. A Celebration of Life for Nellie will be held at a later date.
