Mireya Mendez, known to those closest to her as Mom, was born in Merida,Yucatan, Mexico on March 27, 1938, to Pedro Fonseca and Maria Canto. At the age of16 she married Jesus Mendez. In 1964 Dad came to the U.S. In 1965, the family moved to the U.S. Mom made the trip with her 4 young children and relocated to Oxnard.
In her younger days, Mom worked in the fields and in her later years at the Heublein Chile Cannery. When she became a grandma she decided to take on the roll. Her grandchildren were one of her biggest joys. She enjoyed all her grandchildren and spent majority of her time with them. She was notorious for playing with the kids, especially teaching them to jump rope. We never had a dull moment with Mom, no matter how bad things were. Her sense of humor was always intact. To those that knew her knew she could put a smile on anyone’s face. Mom loved to dance, she always did say that it kept her in shape.
