Manuela “Nellie” Meza, 74, of Moorpark passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 6, 2011 with her loving family by her side. Nellie was born and raised in Moorpark (Virginia Colony) on November 24, 1936. Ironically, her ancestors happened to name the Moorpark Colonia “Virginia Colony”. She attended Flory and the old High School on Casey Road, but graduated from Simi Adult School after having 7 children. Nellie raised 7 children as a single parent and then remarried having twins at the age of 42. “I enjoyed helping people, taking them to Ventura to apply for Social Security, taking them doctor’s appointments, I even took a lady to Ventura to have her baby and was with her while she gave birth holding her hand, prior to the existence of Simi Hospital.” –Nellie Meza She worked the Moorpark Head Start program from 1970-1980, then assisted Ruben Castro at Catholic Charities for several years. For two decades she worked with the U.S. Census. She was also involved in assisting with the polls for various elections at Flory School. Her passion was selling Princess House and Stanley Home Products. She enjoyed taking part in the Church Christmas Boutique as well as selling at local Swap meets. She will be missed dearly by her husband Jesus “Chuy” Meza of 35 years, her loving children, sons Tony, Raul, & Leonard Hernandez and Joey & Andy Meza, daughters Julie E. Alcala, Susan Cardiel. She also leaves behind 17 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Nellie is preceded in death by her father Jose Yslas & mother Mary Perez, her daughter Jenny Hernandez, brothers, Andy Perez, Rudy Perez, Robert Perez, and Roman Yslas.
