Lucy Acosta Collazo, long time resident of Port Hueneme, went to be with the Lord on June 14, 2009 with her family in her home at her bedside. Mrs. Collazo, as many knew her, was born in New York City. She married her husband, Mike Collazo, also of New York, who preceded her in death. Much of her life was spent as the military wife of a Marine, traveling from base to base with their five children, until finally settling in Port Hueneme upon her husband’s retirement.
Mrs. Collazo had a love for life. She enjoyed volleyball in her younger years and was in the CBC bowling league. She was an active supporter of all types of sports and service organizations devoted to helping children. She also had a deep love for birds, taking fallen birds, mostly Sparrows and Blue Jays, into her home where she would nurse them back to health before releasing them to the wild. She was affectionately known to the children in the neighborhood as “Grandma”, as she welcomed them into her home with a warm smile and listening ear. To her own children and grandchildren, she is known as the best mother there could ever be.
She is survived by her five children and spouses: Eileen “Deede” Hernandez, Sonya Alyse Baird (husband Michael), Angela Romanello, Lydia Hense (husband William) Michael Collazo (wife Yvette). Her grandchildren include Stephen Barnes (wife Kim), Stephanie Irlbeck, Brian Parra (wife Victoria), Julie Baird, Michael Baird, Daniel Romanello, Dirk Hense (wife Meghan), Michelle Collazo, Alex Hernandez (wife Yuri), Greg Collazo (fiancée Michelle), Michael Collazo Jr. and Cody Hense, Great grandchildren include Christopher Barnes, Lauren Myers, Valerie Barnes, Taylor Cabral, Alexandria Lucia Irlbeck, Andrew Rodriguez, Bella Abbatoye, Evan Collazo, Theodore Parra and Isabella Hernandez.
