Kevin arrived on February 27, 1977, a welcome addition to the McQuilkin Family of Hacienda Heights, California. Kevin joined sisters Amy (almost 4) and Kimberly (18 months). Kevin was somewhat of a surprise package...a true bonus baby...and the McQuilkins were overjoyed.
Kevin's childhood playmates were Brian Kunishima and Andrea Hettinga. One of their favorite activities was donning their Superman outfits and running out to save the world.
Palm Elementary School was where Kevin attended Kindergarten and First Grade. The family relocated to the wonderful community of Moorpark in 1984 where Kevin attended Flory School and Chaparral Middle School. Kevin loved playing baseball and soccer, and also played the trumpet.
Kevin graduated from Moorpark High School in 1995. While there, he played football and was a member of the MHS Academic Decathlon Team that won the Ventura County Championship in November 1994. Kevin placed first in three events and went on to place third overall in the State Championship.
Following graduation, Kevin attended Chico State University. He returned home prior to completing a degree to go into business with his dad and then establish his own handyman business in Ventura County.
He continued to enjoy hiking, biking and camping. He was never happier than when he was on the bike trails in and around Ventura and up to Ojai. He had a true love of learning and could frequently be found watching the History Channel or one of the Science Channels.
In December 2014 Kevin suffered a head injury while on a job site, eventually leading to a seizure disorder. Kevin was unable to return to work. He died suddenly and unexpectedly while home alone, likely from complications of the seizure disorder.
Kevin is survived by his parents, Sue and Joe McQuilkin (Las Vegas); his sister and brother-in-law, Jack and Amy Rannazzisi (Las Vegas); his sister Kimberly McQuilkin McFadden (Pleasanton, CA); and three young nephews, Zack (10) and Jared (6) Rannazzisi, and Brady McFadden (9).
Kevin is remembered for his many acts of kindness. He died far too soon (at age 40) and is sorely missed by his family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Kevin's memory to the Epilepsy Foundation.
