Jules Titelbaum

Jules Arnold Titelbaum passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 28th. He was born in the Bronx, New York on May 25, 1935 to Morris and Anna Titelbaum, the second of two children. Jules grew up in Brooklyn, New York, where he viewed his sister, Elaine as a mentor. After Jules graduated from James Madison High School in Brooklyn he went on to study biology and earn a Bachelor’s of Science at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Jules received his medical degree from Baylor University College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, where he also completed an internship and residency. He also did a residency at Yale University School of Medicine where he was the Chief Pediatric Resident and completed a fellowship in Infectious Disease. He also achieved a fellowship in Developmental Biology at Albert Einstein School of Medicine. Dr. Titelbaum also served in the U.S. Army as Captain of the medical corps in 1962 & 1963. Teaching was a major focus of his medical career, as evidenced by serving as Instructor of Pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine and as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Since 1972, Dr T served as Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Associate Professor of Preventive Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, New Jersey Medical School. Dr. Titelbaum was a recipient of numerous awards including being honored by the Auxiliary and Medical Staff of Newark Beth Israel Medical Center for his sincere dedication, commitment and outstanding contributions to the Children’s Hospital of New Jersey And NBIMC, the Infectious Disease Physician Appreciation Award from the N.J. Chapter of Infectious Disease Society, the Maimonides Recognition Award from the State of Israel Bonds, and the Recognition Award from the Newark Immunization Initiative. He was a member of the Board of Trustees at NBIMC and a member of the Executive Committee of the Newark Immunization Initiative. He was a member of the Board of Trustees at the Academy of Medicine of New Jersey and was a past President of the Infectious Disease Society of New Jersey and the Northen N.J. Physicians for Social Responsibility. He also served on numerous internal committees within NBIMC and was Chairman of the Medical Center’s Infection Control Committee. Dr. Titelbaum also served on the Infectious Disease Review Board for many years. 

Jules was preceded in death by his father Moe and his mother Anna. He is survived by his loving wife Susan; his sister, Elaine Moss; his son Adam and wife Cindy; his daughter Amy and husband Justin; his five grandchildren Madeline, Jonathan, Benjamin; Tillman and Lyndon; Jules is also remembered by his nephews, nieces, great nieces & nephews, extended family, friends, colleagues, patients, students and those who were formerly complete strangers who Jules befriended. Jules lived most of his life in South Orange, New Jersey. He loved walking through the South Mountain Reservation with Susan and getting up to their house in the Berkshires, in Otis, Massachusetts as often as possible. He taught so many of us to enjoy life, smile, learn, forgive and forget and make the best of life.

A memorial service is planned for Thursday August 1st at the Perez Family Funeral Home in Moorpark, CA. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Jules’ name to the charity of your choice.
