Joyce Clunis (78) of Camarillo, CA, died at home December 20, 2009 after a year-long battle with cancer. Joyce, a 30 year resident of Camarillo, was active in the Pleasant Valley Garden Club, the Alter Guild at St.Colombas's Episcopal Church, the Channel Island Bike Club and volunteered as a docent at the Olivas Adobe in Ventura, CA. A graduate of the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Los Angeles, she worked there for several years before moving to Minnesota. When she returned California in 1979, she worked at Los Robles Hospital in Thousand oaks, CA. She then moved to Huntsville, Al, where she retired from Crestwood Memorial Hospital in 1988.
Joyce graduated from Gardena High School in 1949 and received her RN in 1953. She married and began her family of four children in Manhattan Beach, CA. The family moved to Minnesota in 1963 where they lived in Stillwater for 17 years. All four children graduated from Stillwater High School. After their retirement in 1988, she and her husband moved to Camarillo, CA.
Joyce was a avid gardener and loved flowers. She attended numerous floral design classes and put her artistry to work both doing floral arrangements and teaching floral design to the Garden Club and Altar Guild.
She was also an avid skier, cyclist, hiker, backpacker, mountaineer, pilot, kayaker, and fly-fisher. A lesser known accomplishment, but one of which she was very proud, was her black belt in Judo and of the classes she taught both here in Camarillo and in Mounds Park, MN. She was also a puppeteer for "Kids on the Block" in Huntsville, AL and as such a featured on the United Way Poster for Alabama.
Joyce is survived by her husband of 56 years, Kenneth (Ken) Clunis, 4 children; Pamela(Pam)Graham of Camarillo CA; Sandra (Sam) Clunis-Horak of Bayport, MN; Kevin Clunis of Mahtomedi, MN; Wendy Graham of Santa Paula, CA, 11 grand children and 3 great grand children.
A memorial service will be held at St Colomba's Episcopal Church Saturday, January 9, 2010, 3:00pm with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.
