Josephine Arenas
Moorpark-Our beloved sister and aunt, Josephine Helen Arenas, of Moorpark, passed away on January 17, 2021. She was 97 years old. Josephine was born on July 10, 1923 in San Bernardino, California. Her family emigrated to California in 1919 from Mexico. The Arenas family lived in Palmdale and other places in Los Angeles County before settling in Moorpark in 1934.
Josephine will be lovingly remembered by her surviving sister, Dolores Castro, and a multitude of nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.
Not only was our Aunt Josephine available to spend time with her nieces and nephews after school and on weekends, she was a devoted daughter to our grandparents, Miguel and Micaela Arenas, as their lifelong caregiver.
In addition to being a great cook, Aunt Jo was known by her nieces and nephews as being kind and generous. No family gathering would be complete without Aunt Jo’s potato salad.
She was devoutly religious and found great comfort in praying two rosaries every night.
It was important to her to attend Mass on a regular basis and would do so until her later years. She then began following services on television.
Jo loved Moorpark, and she loved to tell stories of the celebrities from Hollywood’s Golden Era who came to town to film scenes for one of their movies.
Jo and her sisters also loved Notre Dame football and spent many a fall afternoon over the years praying for the Fighting Irish.
She was preceded in death by her parents Miguel and Micaela Arenas, siblings Manuel, Guillermo, Ignacio, Jesus, Mercedes Sandoval, Maria Teresa “Dorothy” Ramirez, Lupe Sanchez, Rosario Luevano, and Irene Carranza.
The cousins would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Castro Family for taking such loving care and devotion to Aunt Jo during these last years.
Services will be held on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at Perez Family Funeral Home, Camarillo, CA. Viewing at 9:00 am followed by Rosary at 10:00 am and Catholic Mass at 11:00 am. Burial immediately following at Santa Clara Cemetery 2370 N. H Street in Oxnard.
