He served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1966 and was stationed along the Demilitarized Zone in Korea and later in Panama.
John moved to Southern California in 1969 and within a few weeks he met Kathy. He quickly became part of the Acree family and took Kathy’s young brothers, who were ages nine and eleven, under his wing. Among other adventures, John took them on camping trips in the Sequoias and King Canyon and taught them how to use a bow and arrow in the hills of southern CA.
John and Kathy were married in December 1971 and soon after, moved to Wisconsin, where John worked in the family construction business.
Great times were spent with the Ajack family, who all lived within a mile of one another in the town of West Allis. Pop-in visits to his parents home at dinner time were frequent, as he knew his mom had enough food for anyone who would stop by.
With so many lakes close by, John’s favorite pasttime was fishing. Trips to beautiful Northern Wisconsin were a favorite.
After nine years in Wisconsin, the desire for a warmer climate led the now family of five back to California, landing in Ventura where John lived for the next 40 years.
He loved spending time with his daughters, taking them fishing, camping, horseback riding, playing music, and telling stories. He was a great story teller. Ralphy, Jolly, and Nini stories were among the favorites. The girls frequented his cabinet shop where John taught them many woodworking skills.
John was a man of many talents. He loved cooking and baking and was known among family members for his delicious Schaumn Torte, a popular Milwaukee dessert. He was a gifted craftsman and had a successful cabinet and furniture making business. Writing, playing, and recording music occupied his time in later years.
