It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Hermelida Cano, also lovingly known as Mela. She passed away on January 18th, 2024, at the age of 81. She was born in Ciudad Guerrero Tamaulipas,México on May 23rd, 1942 to Heriberto González and Lucrecia Salinas González.
She was preceded in death by her dear husband of 48 years, Ricardo Siller Cano, her parents Heriberto and Lucrecia González, and her brothers, Noe and Beto González.
She is survived by her four children, daughters, Rosie Cano, Toni Loe, Sandra (Michael) Patrick and, her son Ricardo (Judy) Cano Jr.; her eight grandchildren, Nicholas and Isaac Cano, Kristina (Gus) Young, Daniel (Anne) Reuter, Ryan and Amber Patrick, Jessi (Amit) Chawla and, Emily (Josh) Householder; her four great grandchildren Wyatt, Rex, Archer and Owen and her beloved dog, Lucas. She is survived by her brothers Maurilio (Natalia) González and Juan González; her sisters Rosa González and Sylvia (Ernest) Bravo and her many nephews and nieces whom she loved very, very much.
She was 10 years old when her family came to the United States. On January 9th, 1961 she married her husband Ricardo in Edinburg, Texas. They moved to Moorpark in 1964 and she began her career with the Moorpark Unified School District in 1974. She worked at Flory Elementary School as an instructional assistant for 9 years and was the Health Technician at Chaparral Middle School for 20 yrs. After 29 years with MUSD, she sadly had to retire due to health problems. She often said that she was blessed to have worked for MUSD and that these were the happiest years of her career. She loved the children and staff; they were like her second family.
While working for MUSD, Mela attended Moorpark College. She needed one more class to receive her Associate Degree and transfer to Cal State Northridge to finish her studies. It was her dream to become a teacher. Unfortunately she was unable to continue her education due to her husband’s work accident but was proud of how much she accomplished while working full time and raising a family.
While her children were growing up, she volunteered with various community groups. She helped Sister Mary Anthony at Holy Cross Church with religious classes. She was a Girl Scout Leader and 4-H Club volunteer. She helped with the Moorpark High School Booster Club and helped supervise the High School Drill Team with their practice. She did all this along with countless other after school activities.
Mela’s hobbies included reading the Daily Word, attending church at Holy Cross every Saturday at 5 PM, scrapbooking for her grandchildren, and calling and facetiming with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed taking Tai Chi classes at the Senior Center with her friends Minnie, Chris and Ana. Her daily walks with her dog, Lucas, brought her so much joy and happiness.
Mela was very proud of her family, her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. They were her life. God was very good to her and He blessed her with a wonderful family, great job and good health for many years. She had so many blessings in her life.
Mela will always be remembered for her beautiful smile, loving heart, and friendly personality. She was the best Nana, grandmother, mother, sister, and aunt anyone could ever ask for. She touched many lives and we will truly miss her each and everyday.
