Bartholomew Lane, Camarillo, CA Bartholomew Lane passed away at home surrounded by family after a five-year valiant battle with cancer at the age of 74. Bart was born in the Bronx, New York from where he left leaving there to join and serve four years in the Marines, earning Good Conduct and National Defense Medals. He then joined the Navy and earned another Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged at Pt. Mugu Naval Base. Upon his discharge from the service Bart met and married Clarice Moore, forming their family, which would be the center of Bart’s World for the rest of his life. They raised three children, Jeff Lane (Redding, Ca), Diane Lane (Camarillo) and Denise Henderson (Eddie-Elk Grove) living in Camarillo for 40 years. Bart earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics Degree and Minor in Computer Science attending Ventura College, University of California at Los Angeles and LaVern College. Bart remained a student his entire life whether it be in a formal or informal way continually working to learn and understand our natural world. Bart was an avid reader. Bart made his career as a Civil Servant at Point Magu Naval Base where he worked as a Mathematician for 25 years. His favorite project was working on the F14 Tomcat. Bart had extensive interests through out his lifetime. His love and appreciation of the natural world being a primary focus. The greatest moments of his life were spent sharing time with his family in nature particularly during his many visits to the Grand Tetons, Wyoming, other national parks and more local venues such as Sycamore Canyon, Mugu Rock and Mt. Pinos. Bart loved to take his children, nephews, nieces and later his grandchildren on hikes educating them and trying to pass on his enthusiasm for nature. Bart was an avid bird watcher traveling the country from California to Minnesota, Alaska toTexas in search of birds often participating in Elder-Hostile programs. Bart spent many years participating in the Christmas Bird count helping to track and document the numbers and types of birds in Ventura County. Bart was a life member of the Audubon Society and several local Bird Watching Clubs. Bart was also an avid soccer enthusiast having been a girls and boys coach, referee, player and fan of youth, US and International professional soccer spending many hours in his later life watching either his grandchildren play soccer or enjoying soccer on television in any language he could find. Bart was physically active his entire life going through various stages of interests and activity including hiking, rock climbing, swimming and bicycling. Bart rode his bike for many years from his home in Camarillo to work at Point Magu completing the 30 mile round trip several times a week. Bart participated for many years in the Juvenile Diabetes Bike Ride. Bart also completed several 100-mile bike rides. In his retirement, Bart cherished the role of his lifetime being Grandfather to Grandsons Jasen Henderson and Braden Henderson (Elk Grove) and Clarissa Lane (Camarillo) spending whatever time he could with them. His last nature outings while battling cancer where spent hiking with his grandchildren. Bart is preceded in death by his parents Bartholomew and Marie, and brothers Edward and Robert. A graveside service is scheduled for Thursday, July 14 at 11:00 at Conejo Mountain Memorial with a Memorial reception to follow.
